DOCTOR FAQs
POSITIONAL PLAGIOCEPHALY, DOES IT MATTER?
Positional Plagiocephaly is a topic of concern among worried parents and there is concern at the lack of available information on how to prevent Plagiocephaly at an early stage. There is currently no scientific proof that babies with Plagiocephaly will have a neurological disorder. However, physiological problems like face asymmetry and malocclusion have been reported, and psychological effects are suspected when patients with severe asymmetry become teenagers.
WHAT IS STANDARD NHS ADVICE?
With increasing numbers of cases across the country, private medical companies are supplying helmets or “loc-bands” intended to correct the condition – known as Plagiocephaly or brachycephalic – but standard NHS advice insists it is cosmetic and likely to correct itself. We offer a prevention method using medically rated Class I safe pillows to distribute pressure and maintain the natural shape of the baby’s head.
IS IT JUST A COSMETIC PROBLEM?
Positional Plagiocephaly is considered to be a cosmetic problem but many parents are distressed that the permanent physical appearance might affect their child’s self-esteem and confidence as they grow up. Parents always want their child to grow healthy, both physically and mentally. Serious deformities can later lead to physical and psychological problems, with cases reported of flat head babies going on to develop a skewed ear or have one eye socket appear larger than the other. Some parents fear that this could increase the risk of bullying when their child goes to school. Research is underway to investigate the effects of Plagiocephaly on other aspects of personal health.
WILL THE NHS PAY FOR IT?
To date, there is no NHS funding for plagiocephaly prevention or treatment.
HOW DO I MEASURE THE SEVERITY OF DEFORMITIES WITH A CRANIOMETER?
Please refer to our product description site to download the full instructions for using the Craniometer.
IS MIMOS PILLOW A MEDICAL DEVICE?
Yes, Mimos pillow is a Class I medical device regulated by CE Health Authority.
WHAT DOES THE AIR-SAFETY (ANTI-SUFFOCATION TUV CERTIFICATION) CERTIFICATION MEAN?
TUV Certifies that this product is safe to be used with babies as there is enough air flow through the body of the pillow to allow normal baby breaths even when the baby lies face down on the pillow.
WILL THIS PILLOW HELP WITH CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS?
No, Craniosynostosis is a deformity caused by premature closure of the fibrous joints between bones of the infant’s skull. This rare syndrome happens once in 2000 births.
HOW CAN MIMOS PILLOW HELP WITH PLAGIOCEPHALY?
Mimos Pillow has been specially engineered to distribute pressure evenly across a wider area of the baby’s soft skull during sleep and rest periods. Its unique oval shape gently cradles baby’s head in the centre, and helps to encourage free rotation of the head and neck. Made of 100% 3D spacer fabric, Mimos Pillow provides balance support for pressure relief as well as regulation of heat and moisture. It is common for babies to have a preferred side for sleeping on, and this tendency can be difficult to change as the baby gets older. While Tummy Time and repositioning techniques can be beneficial in younger babies, they require a lot of attention and hard work.
Mimos pillow makes this task easy because all you have to do is place the baby on the pillow without worrying about the location of the deformity. As long as the head rests within the pillow cavity, the pressure on the head will be massively reduced as the weight is distributed over a larger area of the contact.
HOW TO MAINTAIN THE PILLOW (CAN I WASH IT)?
We recommend turning the pillow once a day to maintain its original shape (example: flip over the pillow to the reverse side but keeping the shorter part at lower side). It can be washed at 20o Celsius with cotton care washer.
HOW CAN MIMOS HELP TO RE-ASSURE THE PARENTS WHO ARE CONCERNED THEIR BABY MAY HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED PLAGIOCEPHALY?
Minor positional Plagiocephaly usually improves over time with repositioning, Tummy Time, massage therapy and Mimos Pillow. We also provide Craniometer to measure the deformities index together with the monitoring chart to track the development over the time. Please refer to product page for details.
CLINICAL TRIAL?
We are very excited to share with you the clinical trial result that has recently been published in the Health journal. This study has shown that the use of our Mimos pillow has significantly reduced the severity of the developmental Plagiocephaly. Clinical Trial Results at https://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=33167
We are currently running two randomised and blinded clinical trials (Level – I) in Spain and Sweden and we are expecting positive results to be confirmed before the end of this year (until then we cannot claim it will 100% improve the condition). However, Mimos has been available in international markets for more than 4 years and has been recommended by many paediatricians and doctors. We have had many reports of great results. Therefore we would probably position ourselves around Level-II or level III on evidence-based research guideline.
